Murano

Murano is a collection of islands next to Venice, famed for their artisan glass and colourful houses. They are a short Vaporetto ride from Venice. Murano’s islands are all linked by bridges and it’s a beautiful place to visit. It’s much quieter than Venice itself and the picturesque canals lined with endless painted buildings will stick in your mind forever! There are also plenty of glass workshops and retail outlets to browse around.

We loved the feel of Murano. Even though it’s still busy with tourists, it’s much more relaxed then Venice. Most of the visitors here are drinking in cafes or browsing around glass factories, rather than rushing from sight to sight. In most of these workshops you can actually watch the artisans create their glassware using techniques which have survived for centuries. There is also a glass museum in Murano with over 4000 exhibits to see including a huge chandelier.

To enjoy Murano further, consider staying on the islands. There are a range of hotels and rented accommodation and it offers a more relaxed stay than Venice itself. Check out some of the options here: Booking.com
