Rome’s Secret Streets

Rome is one of the world’s most visited cities and with so much to see and do, it’s crammed with tourists. The major sights are always busy day and night, whatever time of year you visit. However, we’d recommend trying to get away from these locations and experience the ‘real’ Rome. All you need to do, is seek out the quiet streets by walking around. We call them ‘secret streets’, but they’re actually there in plain sight for anyone to find if you go looking for them. You won’t be disappointed!

Above is Via Del Coronari near Piazza Navona and it’s typical of the ‘secret’ streets you can seek out. Along them, ordinary Romans go about their daily life and there’s hardly a tourist in sight. Other areas we’d recommend seeking out are Piazza d. Pietre near Templo Adriano and Via in Aquiro near Palazzo Chigi (the Prime Ministers house), but there are many more you can discover just by walking off the beaten track a little. As you walk around these ‘secret streets’ you’ll stumble across unusual bits of history, because it’s literally everywhere in Rome.

One of the common themes of these quieter streets are the plants outside people’s houses and offices. They beautify the area and make it even more pleasant to walk along. As you’re strolling along these streets, take a good look at the buildings. Most are historic in their own way and have remained unchanged for decades.

This map shows the location of Via in Aquiro near the Prime Minister’s Palace, but you can move it around to see other nearby streets. You’ll also notice how close many of the ‘secret’ streets are to major tourist attractions that will be packed with visitors.
