Pisa has a lovely traditional food market which is well worth passing through. You’ll find it in several streets just off the main walkway, Via Borgo Stretto, north of the river. At the heart of the market is a small arcaded piazza which provides some cover if it rains, but stalls continue in the streets the other side. You’ll find sellers with fruit and veg, olives, cheeses, meats and all kinds of other Italian culinary delights. At times it’s a feast for the eyes and you’re bound to end up buying something!
The main part of the market is located in Piazza delle Vettovaglie, but often stalls continue through the arch. You’ll also find some interesting history in the market area. One of Pisa’s huge ancient towers is located here (Torre del Campano). There are 4 ancient towers in this central part of Pisa. We enjoyed walking through the market and being part of its lively, colourful atmosphere. The market is open daily (except Sunday) from 7am till 1.30pm although some sellers are there longer into the afternoon.
