Rufford Abbey in Nottinghamshire is a former Cistercian Abbey dating from around 1170 which was later converted into a stately home. The building is managed in conjunction with English Heritage which describes it as ‘the best-preserved remains of a Cistercian abbey west cloister range in England’. Despite this historic significance, it’s a curious place to visit because it feels somewhat confused. Is it an Abbey, a stately mansion, a leisure business or a country park? In essence, it’s all of them and as such there is something for everyone here.

From the founding of the abbey until the dissolution of the monasteries in England in 1536, Rufford was home to a community of ‘white monks’. This name came about because they wore undyed wool. They lived a basic lifestyle of prayer and hard work here. Once they had gone, the abbey became home to the Earls of Shrewsbury and then the wealthy Savile family. Each generation added to the site until it was purchased by Nottinghamshire County Council in the 1950s. It’s now operated by a private company which organises events to generate an income. When you visit today, you can wander around the abbey ruins and limited parts of the former stately home, as well as exploring the country park.

The parkland has lots of activities these days with archery, walking trails, adventure golf and a boating lake. There’s also a cafe and some small shops. We’d have liked to have seen much more of the hall though. Once of the best things about a visit to Rufford Abbey is that admission is free. There is a hefty car parking charge however of £7 a day (2025 prices). The park is open daily throughout the year although most of the attractions only operate from March to October.
