The Boboli Gardens in Florence are at the rear of the Pitti Palace and they are truly beautiful. If you’re looking for somewhere to escape the crowds and relax, come here. Italian gardening at its best including water features, hidden statues, superb floral walkways and large terracotta pots. You feel like you’re a million miles away from everything, and yet the bustling city centre of Florence is less than half a mile away!
Once you enter Boboli gardens, you are greeted by the most formal area of the gardens including the grand fountain pictured below. As you move further away from the palace, the gardens become less formal with irregular paths and features. The ticket office for both Pitti Palace and Boboli gardens is on the right hand wing of the palace building. There are several options for tickets, so if you’re planning to do the palace as well, make sure you allow enough time to explore and buy a combined ticket. Tickets for the gardens also include admission to the Porcelain Museum, the Costume Gallery and Museo degli Argenti.
The Costume Gallery – This comprises of six thousand items including costumes dating from the 16th century.
Museo degli Argenti – This is the treasury of the Medici located in the Summer Apartments on the ground floor and on the mezzanine floor of the palace.
The Porcelain Museum – This is actually housed in a separate building (Palazzina del Cavaliere) at the top of the gardens and contains porcelain bought by Pietro Leopoldo and Ferdinand III plus other porcelain from the historical palaces of Parma, Piacenza and Sala Baganza.
Adult admission for the gardens and the galleries listed above is 7 Euros (2016 prices). They are open November to February from 8.15am to 4.30pm, in March from 8.15am to 5.30pm, April, May, September and October from 8.15am to 6.30pm and June to August from 8.15am to 7.30pm.
We’d like to thank Adrian Boughey for supplying all the photos on this page – They were much better than ours!
