Slotsholmen Island, in the centre of Copenhagen, is the home Christiansborg Castle. This is the largest building on the island and inside it is the Danish parliament, the Prime Minister’s apartment, the High Court and the Royal Reception Rooms. The island is also home to the Royal stables and it’s not unusual to see the horses being exercised in the large outdoor arena. The State Rooms here are open to the public and the tower at the centre of the palace is free to climb for a great view of Copenhagen.
Look out also for the gardens of the Royal Library with the performing fountains in the central pool cascade. Other notable buildings on Slotsholmen island include Christian IV’s Stock Exchange with a fascinating central tower and fairytale like gables, the ‘Black Diamond’ modern extension to the Royal Library and Christian IV’s brewhouse (pictured below) overlooking the harbour.
The Royal Reception Rooms inside Christiansborg Palace are open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm (April to October). Adult admission is 80 DKK. The Royal Stables are open Tuesday to Sunday from 1.30pm to 4pm (April to October). Adult admission is 50 DKK. You can also buy a combination ticket which allows entrance to the Stables, Royal Rooms and the Ruins for 120 DKK (2016 prices)
